This month Figure: Cheryl Harsch
Future Fitness and Figure Star:
1. What show are you doing this year?
2007 Alberta Provincial Figure Tier 1
2. Who is your Trainer? (and why?)
Tanis Hill introduced me to Martha Lombardo-Grant in February and ever since then I’ve been hooked on her! (Thank you, Tanis!)
Although it has only been a short while since I met Martha, I’m confident that she has the knowledge, years of experience, and definitely the passion in what she does. It’s quite apparent to me that she is a leader, a motivator, a teacher and a person who is not afraid to be straight up with you and will tell you like it is (just what “I” need!).
I typically train on my own, so it can be easy just to “give up” some times, but now, it’s Martha’s voice I hear in my head saying, “Come on girl, just a few more. You can do it!”
3. Bio: Brief history until present date.
I’m 32 years old and have lived in Calgary for over half of my life. I currently work in the administration field and have for over 11 years. Unlike some of these other ladies, I’m not an “athlete” nor have I played many sports; however, the one activity that I’ve enjoyed the most is going to the gym.
In high school, my best friend introduced me to her gym and killed my calves on my first workout…I couldn't’t walk for a week! However, that didn’t stop me. With some well needed guidance, I learned the proper way to train and have loved it ever since. Out of any other “sport” that I’ve attempted, working out at the gym is where I’m most comfortable and confident.
Over the years I’ve learned so much by watching others, reading fitness magazines/books, and working with different trainers; and I look forward to continuing to learn more from this inspirational group of ladies.
4. Achievements: List of Competitions and your Ranking
None…yet!
5. What are goals and outcome you want to gain from competing this year?
My goal is to place in the Top 10 of my class in Tier 1 at Provincials. Although this is my first competition, I would be lying if I said that I didn’t want to win; however, really the “win” for me is taking that first step on stage, and… look like I belong there.
I would also love to gain more exposure—I want to learn more about diet (nutrition) and training at the competition level, as well as on an every day basis to maintain a healthy lifestyle, especially as the years are creeping up on me! J
For many years, I’ve “talked” about competing. At first, I thought about (lightweight) bodybuilding; however, I never did have the guts to go through with it. There were also a few times that I set goals to compete—first by this year and then by that year. I even wrote down a goal to compete by age 30 and still no follow through. Finally, at 32, I discovered the determination to compete in a figure competition. And, because I believe in “everything happens for a reason”, I’m learning to let go of whatever excuses I made and know now is the right time for me.
6. Goals: For Future (upcoming year/years).
To place in the Top 10 at Provincials this June, so that I qualify for Tier 2 in 2008; and to be open to any possibilities that may be ahead of me as a result of this experience. My dream would be to share my success stories in a health magazine—Oxygen!
7. What is your favourite exercise?
Anything but legs! I like back exercises—specifically seated row.
8. Describe yourself in one sentence?
Smiley, bubbly, friendly, positive, sensitive, loyal, and organized.
9. What do you do for fun?
Going for walks/hikes, working out, hanging with friends, baking (reality…I love eating the finished products!!)
